The Best Way to Edit Photos on the Go

Q: What is the Best Editing Software for my Instagram content for people on the go?

VSCO PHOto Editing App

VSCO is a mobile photo editing app that allows you to set filters, adjust exposure, saturation, and much more. The tool is designed to insure you are able to post the highest quality content possible while keeping your content aesthetic.

As a photographer I was very skeptical of mobile editing applications like VSCO. Being constantly on the go with demanding clients I quickly learned to love the idea that I can edit a photo anywhere without damaging the quality. I would simply upload my photos from my recent shoot through my Nikon App, then upload them onto my VSCO app.

Many clients I have worked with need to upload content on their social media rapidly, so I need to send them at least a couple edits as soon as possible. VSCO is great for those times and an editing tool anyone can learn how to use. Compared to other software that will cost a lot of money like Adobe Lightroom, VSCO allows the essential tools without breaking the bank.

How do I get set up?

  1. Begin in the app store on your mobile device and download the application.

  2. Once downloaded it will ask you to create an account with email and password

  3. Once inside you click the “+” on the top right corner of your device and select the image you want to edit

  4. Once the image is uploaded in VSCO you have to double click the image and hit the edit button on the bottom left

Now that you have selected the image you would like to edit you can pick from a number of filters. Example of the filters to choose from:

How to pick the filter?

First think about your social media feed as it stands currently. Remember that the colors must be consistent. Try breaking your content into a category like “warm-toned”, “vibrant”, or “dark-toned”. All of your content should be consistent within that category.

Slide left to scroll through all the filters VSCO offers. There will be a selection of filters that are recommended by VSCO in a category with the tittle "for this photo". This category gives you a filter that might correspond well with the color tones in the photo. You will find that there are some filters that are locked, and you’ll have to pay $20 a year for VSCO X to unlock those and utilize other editing tools. Once you have selected your filter click the editing button below it for advanced editing tools.

Exposure, crop, sharpen, and saturation are just a few essential tools used to edit content. Once selected a slider will appear and you can determine the intensity you prefer for each of these settings. If you decide to pay for VSCO X you will be able to adjust specific colors through its HSL tool.

I suggest using the same filter or few filters to keep your page consistent. After you have selected your filter and advanced edits you can save this as your very own preset by clicking the button on the far bottom right. To make sure all of your photos are consistent you can then copy paste the same preset edits onto every photo and then adjust accordingly.

VSCO also works as a social media platform allowing you to share your photos using captions and hashtags like those used on Instagram. Your post will go on a feed where other people can express gratitude through likes, share, follow, and/or message.

Overall VSCO is a very useful photo editing app that I am extremely happy with and is perfect for editing photos on the go.
